Web-based applications provide the power of desktop and server applications with the flexibility and accessibility of the Web. Using Web browsers, users can securely access applications from anywhere within the reach of the company intranet or extranet. Users have access to the data 24/7.
Eventually web-based applications will replace the desktop. Well maybe they won't replace the desktop, but they just might replace some of these expensive full productivity suites. But first web-based apps need to prove that they can do job and do it securely. Office applications are to important to business.
Currently the web-based applications do not produce what I would consider professional looking work. Especially when someone is trying to open a product that you created using a web-based doc. another downside is that you need a connection to the web to access your apps. If your connection is flaky your just gonna make yourself crazy trying to accomplish your tasks. Apps that stay on your computer are just more accessible.
I don't see web-based applications taking over for at least another 10 years. But as Internet speeds to homes increase web-based applications will look a little more appealing.

5,000 channels and still nothing on TV
Internet shows will be soon coming to your TV. But first these IpTV providers will need to overcome to factors, Quality and Content. The majority of people who receive traditional broadcast TV and channel are not going to get on board just because companies are making it easier for you to choose online content. These same people aren't going to sit down on the couch and watch the TV if they don't like the content or if the content is of poor quality. If I did have a thousand dollars to spend on a HDTV I wouldn't use it to watch someones crappy video made from someones phone. IPTV and on-demand video won't change channel surfing behavior for some time. TV is changing and will continue to change, because the Internet (You Tube, Google Video, and Yahoo Video). We won't see a massive change for another 10 years.
IPTV can bring in various forms of content to the television (broadcast TV, online video, gaming, IM, VoIP) because they all share the same transport medium. IPTV has the capibility to mix, match, and combine the services and provide the user content that they prefer.
Joost has just signed a contract Viacom to provide the content (not exactly the best shows yet) and promises to start providing content soon.
This should provide new opportunities to host/direct shows for local companies. The cable companies would see a growth and need people knowledgable of networking. Knowing networking and understanding the OSI Model and TCP/IP Addressing would be good skill to have.

One ID One Password
Currently I have a username and password for every web application that I use. I have one for my bank, email, ebay, Amazon, blackboard, and even this blogspot. My identity on the web is unverifiable and linear. They don't really know who I am just information that I provide them that can not be verified. I go from site to site filling out registrations providing them with my information and then they track my purchases, my likes, and what I'm reading. But that data is their data, I can't take take with me anywhere. I can't take my Amazon favorites over to Barnes & Nobles for help with buying books. With One ID I can tell both Barnes & Nobles and Amazon about my favorite books and music that I enjoy.
It would be nice if I could take my ID with me from site to site and the sites can use my ID to verify who i am and provide me a service. Much like the same way when I go and try to purchase a beverage of my choice when ID is required. I show my ID they verify my age and give me what I want or I could choose not to give them my ID and not receive their product.
